Fly into the jewel of South Carolina: Charleston. You will spend three nights here which will give you time to explore the city on foot and by horse drawn carriage, visit Fort Sumter where the first shots of the Civil War were fired and sample some of Charleston’s wonderful food. Shrimp and grits are the staple which come in all shapes and sizes, but this is just the beginning of a wonderful gourmet journey. Take a tour out to the amazing plantation homes of Middleton and Boone Hall or collect your car a day early so that you can explore on your own. They are less than a half an hour from the city centre.

Collect your car to start the journey south. The first day will be a short drive – just 90 minutes to Beaufort (pronounced Bufort) which is a charming small city steeped in history and where many films have been shot. Forrest Gump, The Big Chill and White Squall amongst others. Visit some of the fine homes dating back to the Civil War or take a kayak through the salt marsh.
You might want to detour to the resort island of Kiawah for some luxury hotels, beach or golf time.

Continue on to Savannah, which like Charleston is a port city; sitting on the River Walk watching the action on the river is one of life’s pleasures. Savannah is famous for many things not least of which are its beautiful squares and there is no one better to introduce you to them than Savannah Dan and a walking tour with him is included in your holiday. You will also have time to have a day on the beach at Tybee Island, visit the cemetery where Johnny Mercer and many other composers are buried, see the cathedral and enjoy the food and beauty of this vibrant southern city.

Leaving the city behind, you can either take the Interstate 95 or the slower route 17. We would strongly recommend the latter. This is the south and you are on southern time, relaxed and on holiday. You are heading into the Golden Isles and where you will stay really depends on your interests and the type of hotel you like. There is a choice between the ultra-luxurious Sea Island just off St. Simons Island or the Jekyll Island Club steeped in history on a very sleepy island. There is such variety you might want to stay in two places, perhaps St. Simon’s Island combined with Cumberland Island. We would suggest at least 3 nights in the area to be able to enjoy the beaches, wildlife and culture of the Golden Isles.

Follow the coast south to St. Mary’s Georgia for three nights at the Spencer House Inn in the heart of the historic district. St. Mary’s is the gateway to Cumberland Island, once owned by the Carnegie family, and we highly recommend you spend a day here to see the pristine maritime forests and to soak up the history ranging from the early Timucuan Indians to the battles of 1812. Your second day in St. Mary’s should be spent visiting the Okefenokee Swamp Park. It is a National Wildlife Refuge; you will almost certainly see plenty of alligators and you might also see black bear, otters and Sandhill cranes. You are best advised to take a boat tour but there is also a boardwalk and other paths through the park.
