Collect your car and head out of town towards Mystic in Connecticut for 3 nights. This two-hour drive could be split in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island. In Mystic, there is lots to see and do. Mystic Seaport is a living history recreation of a 19th-century whaling port and home to the Charles W Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in the world. Watch as sails are rigged on tall ships and newspapers are printed; help make a rope or dip candles. Nearby are Mystic Aquarium and the deep-sea Institute for Exploration.
TIP – Buy a Mystic Pass Card to save time and money. In nearby Groton, go aboard USS Nautilus at the Submarine Force Museum on the Thames River: the world’s first nuclear powered vessel, the first ship to go to the North Pole, the first submarine to journey ‘20,000 Leagues under the sea’ and in Ledyard, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum is the USA’s largest Native American museum, with interactive exhibits that bring the tribe’s heritage and culture to life.
