Portland, Oregon, is a city of surprises. Sitting on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers and in the shadow of Mount Hood, Portland is the place to visit if you love food, wine, books, gardens, in fact almost anything!
Portland is above all a walking city, wander around stopping off at one (okay, maybe more) of the food trucks, vist Powell’s enormous book shop and browse the tax-free shops.

Take the day to explore Portland. If the weather is nice, today might be a good day to visit Washington Park where you will find the International Rose Test Garden. It is fascinating to see all the different varieties: over 10,000 roses. The free Explore Washington Park shuttle stops at all the major attractions including the delightful Japanese garden. Another option would be to join a walking tour of Portland either feasting at the food carts or the favourite city sights.

Today the morning is free for relaxation. At 1pm you will join a small group tour (maximum 10 people) to see two of the greatest attractions of the Pacific Northwest – the Columbia Gorge and some Oregon wineries. Watch for bald eagles and ospreys as you meander around some of the 70 waterfalls that dot the gorge making your way towards the fertile basin of Hood River. Highlights will be the 620 feet Multnomah Falls, Benson Bridge, the stories of the exploits of Lewis & Clark who did so much to open up the West Coast and the sheer beauty of the Gorge.

Another day to investigate Portland. Perhaps you would like to explore Powell’s City of Books, The Lan Su Chinese Garden, indulge in some tax-free shopping or visit one of the many museums in the city. Portland is known for its arts scene, so do ask Frontier America to get you some tickets for a show.

A full day tour to Mount St. Helens and the Ape Cave. Again, there will be a maximum of 10 people as you travel into the heart of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. You will see the steaming volcano just miles from the crater, see how the ecosystem is recovering after the powerful 1980 eruption. Dipping into Washington State, you will see the forested south slope and the barren landscapes of the blast zone. You will drive along Spirit Lake Highway stopping to spelunk in the cool of Ape Cave, the third largest lava tube in the US and if you wish, a peaceful walk along the Hummocks Trail beside Coldwater Lake. After a picnic lunch, you will go to the Johnston Ridge Observatory for an interpretative walk along the Eruption Trail which offers sweeping views into the crater. You will return to Portland at 1830.

A seven hour excursion into the Willamette Valley where you will visit at least 3 wineries of the 250 in this the most famous of Oregon’s wine producing areas. Known especially for its Pinot Noir, the chardonnays and rieslings are also delicious.

Your final day in Portland before either returning home or embarking on another city break or fly drive. You might like to twin your stay in Portland with San Francisco or Seattle or collect a car to explore more of the Pacific Northwest.
Some of the tours do not operate every day so the itinerary will be adjusted to fit your departure day. Also as all Frontier America’s holidays are tailor made, the tours mentioned in the itinerary are not mandatory and can be substituted or ignored if you want to spend more time in the city. For instance, if you would prefer a tour along the stunning Oregon coast, this can easily be arranged for you.
