Try white-water rafting, kayaking or quiet float trips then head to the mountain village of Stowe for some hiking, biking or just a visit to the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory! Finally head to Acadia National Park on the northern coast where you can go on a horse ride, cycle the trails, go out in a lobster boat or enjoy a nature walk with a park ranger. Basketball, the world’s most popular indoor sport, was born in Springfield in 1891. One of the world’s most impressive sports museums, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is the ultimate fan experience, combining history and interactive exhibits. In Agawam, Six Flags New England is a classic US theme park, with coaster rides including the five-storey high Gotham City Gauntlet Escape from Arkham Asylum. Springfield was also the birthplace of Dr Seuss. You can wander through the Dr Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden for a look at the Cat in the Hat and Yertle the Turtle cast in bronze. The city served as a major arsenal during the Revolutionary War, the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, displays an enormous collection of small pistols.

As you head for the hills today, we recommend going via Hildene to the Lincoln Family Home just outside Manchester. Listen to the 1,000-pipe organ; see one of President Abraham Lincoln’s famous stovepipe hats and then let off steam at Bromley Mountain Resort’s Aerial Adventure Park which has a zip line, water and alpine slides.
Stowe is a very pretty mountain town which among other things is the home to Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream and you can tour the factory. The award-winning Recreation Path leads to all sorts of activities and there is also an alpine slide and climbing wall, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking. You can also stay in the Trapp Family Lodge, still run by the Von Trapp family of ‘Sound of Music’ fame.

Today is a lovely drive through the White Mountains and we suggest you stop at Bretton Woods to ride the steepest railroad tracks in North America to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. Acadia National Park, known as the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, is one of the USA’s most popular destinations. There are many delightful towns along the Maine coast, we have chosen Camden, partly because it is so pretty, partly because you can take a Windjammer Cruise either for a few hours or several nights, and partly because there is a lot to see and do in the area. Other options might include Rockland where you can visit the Owls Head Transportation Museum: many of the 100 historic aircraft, cars and motorbikes are in full working order, Kennebunkport with its long sandy beaches and the Seashore Trolley Museum and Freeport, home to LL Bean and dozens of outlet shops.

This was the first time I had ever organised such a major holiday and as it was a gift for my children after my retirement it was really important to get things right. I went to quite a few agencies but Jeannette was way better than any of the people who I spoke to. She was so professional and wanted me to get the best from the money I could afford. The holiday was absolutely amazing and everything went like clockwork. Jeannette had thought of everything even the connections between places and the things we would do in each town.
