Three of the classic cities in the South are the backbone of this lovely fly-drive holiday, meandering through Civil War history, glorious antebellum homes and majestic rivers – all the while eating delicious southern food. The holiday can be driven in either direction, but we suggest starting in Atlanta so that you can add on some beach time in the Golden Isles or Hilton Head at the end if you wish.

Atlanta is an easy city to walk around; whilst you are here visit the Coca Cola Museum, CNN to watch a news cast and the Atlanta Aquarium all of which are 5 – 10 minutes walk from one another. The Martin Luther King walking tour was fascinating and a must, if you have the time there is a full days tour which include the museums and the civil right trails. Charleston was another surprising city, much quieter and refined with fabulous buildings and a calmness about it. The Middleton Plantation was a real learning curve and dining on Shrimp and Grits was something else. I can’t wait to return here soon!”

You will have three nights in the city which will give you time to explore the world of Coca Cola or of Gone with the Wind, indulge in some serious retail therapy in Buckhead Village, visit the Olympic Centennial Park or stroll through the beautiful Botanical gardens.

Collect your hire car from downtown. We suggest a fairly early start so that you have time to stop along the Antebellum Trail at Milledgeville and Madison to see the Governor’s Mansion and some of the other beautiful plantation homes or Civil War sites. Arrive in Savannah in time for a glass of something refreshing to see the sun set over the river. Savannah is one of the busiest ports in the US and it is fascinating to watch all the river traffic.
Savannah is noted for its 22 beautiful squares and there is no one better way than a walking tour which is included in the cost of your holiday. Work up an appetite for lunch at one of Savannah’s sidewalk cafes or if you are really hungry, Mrs Wilkes Dining Room is the place to go for a tasting of all Savannah’s noted dishes in an extraordinary atmosphere. Be warned, Mrs Wilkes is very popular and you will have to queue. Speaking of food: enjoy sea food with a southern twist at one of Savannah’s fine restaurants such as Elizabeth on 37th or the Old Pink House. Tybee Island, on the outskirts of the city has splendid beaches if you would like a day away from sightseeing.

Charleston & South Carolina
Time to bid a sad goodbye to Savannah and head north to Charleston, South Carolina, stopping along the way to see the Civil War sites and historic buildings at Beaufort (pronounced Bufort). It is a charming town with a couple of excellent inns if you would like to spend the night.
You will have two full days in Charleston and we suggest you keep your car today so that you can go out to visit the plantation homes along the river. There are lots to choose from but the four we recommend, all very close to Charleston, are Boone Hall Plantation & Garden, Drayton Hall, Middleton Place and Magnolia Plantation & Gardens.
We recommend and include one of the horse-drawn carriage tours which will fill you in on the history and take you down some of the back streets of this extraordinary city. You can also visit Fort Sumter National Monument which is where the first shots were fired to start the Civil War. This evening, enjoy a cruise along the Charleston River, listen to some music and enjoy some of Charleston’s legendary shrimp and grits.
