Boston City Break
Boston has so much to offer at any time of year whether for a short city break, the beginning of a longer holiday in New England or as a twin centre with New York or Toronto.
Boston is less than 8 hours flight from the UK and the Logan International Airport is so close to the city centre that you can be in your downtown hotel less than 10 hours after leaving your UK airport. As you can see from the suggested holiday, there is a huge variety of things to do and see in this vibrant and historic city. Five days is not enough to do it justice, but you can always return.

Ideas
Cape Cod
Take the 90-minute ferry from Boston to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod. (the fast ferry runs from May through to mid-October) to spend a few days in this most iconic of Cape Cod towns. Driving to Cape Cod is also easy and would allow you more freedom to explore the peninsula.
Visit another City
Another option would be to twin your time in Boston with a visit another US City such as Providence, New York or Washington. You can obviously fly between cities, but it might be more relaxing to take the AMTRAK train. The journey to New York takes around 3 ½ or 4 hours depending on the service chosen with the added advantage of arriving in the centre of Manhattan. Providence, the capital of Rhode Island is only 35 minutes by train.

Combine your time in Boston with the Canadian cities of either Montreal, Toronto or Halifax
New England Inns
New England is known for its inns: why not hire a car and explore the countryside for a couple of nights. Perhaps take in a concert at Tanglewood, the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge or the Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich. Stay in Castle Hill, Ipswich, the stunning Tudor Revival Mansion or one of the Captain’s inns in Kennebunkport. The choices are endless.

Start your day on the top floor of the Prudential Building. From 52 floors up, you can see a 360 degree view of Boston – and on a clear day you can even see the White Mountains of New Hampshire! Hop on an Old Town Trolley and get off at Boston Common to walk Boston’s famous Freedom Trail, a red line on the sidewalk that links 16 of the city’s historic landmarks. Start at the Boston Common, America’s first public park, walk through the Old Granary Burying Ground, where some of the best known leaders of the American Revolution are buried: John Hancock, Samuel Adams & Paul Revere. You’ll even find Mary Goose (a.k.a. Mother Goose of nursery rhyme fame). Walk by the Old State House where the Declaration of Independence was read in public for the first time in 1776. Continue to Faneuil Hall, a meeting hall and marketplace when it was originally built in 1772, it’s now known for its shopping and dining. Grab lunch at the Union Oyster House, the oldest continuously operated restaurant in America, then continue onto the Old North Church, where the lanterns were flashed (one if by land, two if by sea) to warn of British troop movements during the Revolution. And end up at the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship in the United States Navy. She was nicknamed in Old Ironsides in the War of 1812 when cannonballs bounced off her hulls – in fact, the ship is made of live oak.
If sports are your thing, take in baseball game with the Red Sox at the world-famous Fenway Park, during the winter, go to the Fleet Center and watch the Boston Celtics play basketball or support the local Boston Bruins ice hockey team. You can also go whale-watching, take a dinner cruise on Boston Harbour, or just go sit by the water for a cocktail as you contemplate your day.

Wander through Beacon Hill and discover the red-brick townhouses and cobbled streets of the “original” Boston. Enjoy the Boston Common and Public Garden, the oldest botanical garden in the United States. Whilst there you can take a Swan Boat ride. Just a few steps away on Beacon Street you can have lunch at the original Cheers where the TV show was filmed. In the afternoon, why not take a Duck Tour of the city on one of the original amphibious vehicles used in World War II – drive around the city, see where Thomas Edison discovered electricity, and take a ride on the famous Charles River. With so many restaurants to choose from try one of Boston’s “famous chef” restaurants perhaps ending the evening at one of Boston’s late-night clubs on Lansdowne Street.

Take a change of scenery and visit Cambridge. Just across the river from Boston, Cambridge is the home of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Harvard is the oldest university in the United States, founded in 1636. Its library, Widener Library, houses 11 million books that are available to students and faculty, as well as the general public. Harvard also has eight museums, including a Museum of Natural History, and three world-class art museums. While you’re in Harvard Square, visited by over 8 million people each year, shop at one of the dozens of bookstores that Cambridge is renowned for, enjoy the street theatre and public art.

Interested in a little culture? View the great masters at the Museum of Fine Arts or the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. Visit the Museum of Science, the New England Aquarium or perhaps the John F. Kennedy Library & Museum. Stroll up Newbury Street to have lunch at one of the many outdoor cafes and do a little shopping along the way before returning to the airport.
