LA, La-La Land, the City of Angels – however you describe it, Los Angeles is California’s liveliest city and one of the most recognisable skylines in the world, thanks to the circular US Bank Tower skyscraper which houses the OUE Skyspace LA open-air observation deck with 360 degree views of the city.

The main hub is the city of Los Angeles, where each side street boasts inviting neighbourhoods, in which real a-list celebrities really do walk the pavements, great cultural institutions such as the striking Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall and the contemporary building that is the Broad Museum and, of course, fabulous shopping in the 100-block Fashion District and Olvera Street. Part of the El Pueblo De Los Angeles historic district, this Mexican-flavoured street is in the oldest part of Los Angeles and has held a Mexican market since 1930.

Legendary Hollywood – the real Tinseltown – lies north-west of downtown, spelt out in the hills above on the iconic Hollywood sign. First erected in 1923, the best views of the city’s most famous beacon can be had from Mulholland Highway or, from town, look up at the sign from the Hollywood and Highland Centre.  If you are out enjoying the great outdoors, spot the sign while hiking the West Trail in Griffith Park or on guided trail ride from Sunset Ranch.
